Our dedicated Neighbour of Choice initiative, which forms part of our wider Global Corporate Responsibility programme, provides support to a wide range of projects that address the needs of local communities across Ireland.
At MSD we recognise our responsibility to invest in local charities and organisations that provide essential services in the communities where our employees live and work. Over the past four years, we have contributed over €320,000 to local communities, charities and causes across Ireland. A vital part of our employee volunteerism programme, Neighbour of Choice illustrates MSD's ongoing commitment to the communities in which it operates.
Access to health
The MSD/NALA Health Literacy Initiative, which ran for seven years, was a partnership between MSD and the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA). It aimed to increase public and healthcare professional awareness of the critically important issue of health literacy in Ireland.
People with low health literacy make more mistakes with medication or treatment, are less able to follow treatment instructions, have difficulties negotiating the healthcare system, and are more likely to be hospitalised than people with adequate health literacy.
We developed the Crystal Clear MSD Health Literacy Awards to recognise the pursuit of clarity in health literacy across education, training, health writing, research and patient communications, and to reward innovation in this field.
Our successes in this area include:
Our Swords facility achieving a 42% reduction in landfill waste over the last four years.
The installation of solar panels for hot water generation in the Employee Services Building at our Ballydine site in Co.Tipperary in 2011 - these will reduce water use by 7,000m3 and CO2 emissions by 100 metric tonnes
The implementation of a programme at our Brinny site in Co Cork to reduce the number of medicine vials sent for incineration by 50,000 a year.
Across all of our sites in Ireland, our MSD employees develop relationships with local community groups and support projects that enhance the environment, support education and contribute to the local business community.
We are proud to say we have:
Provided over €320,000 to local Irish community organisations and charities (nominated by our employees) , through our Neighbour of Choice Grant Programme.
Established a national partnership across all our Irish sites with Junior Achievement, one of the country’s leading youth organisations and seen 150 volunteers delivering courses to more than 3,000 students.
Invited the chemists and engineers of the future to visit our sites during Science Week and Engineers Week.
Developed Volunteer Month to support our people in their passion for giving back.
