LIFE AT CARLOW

Location

Carlow in County Carlow is one of the fastest growing towns in Ireland. And no wonder: it's an extremely attractive place to live and work, offers a wide range of competitively priced housing, excellent schools and a third level education facility as well as plenty of other amenities.

Situated in the south-east of Ireland, 84 km from Dublin, Carlow has a population of just over 18,000 (2006 census). The tranquil River Barrow flows through the town, and forms the historic boundary between counties Laois and Carlow. The settlement is thousands of years old and pre-dates written Irish history. The town has played a major role in Irish history, serving as the country's capital in the 14th century.

In modern day Carlow, the music and traditions of Irish culture form a backdrop to a diverse range of things to see and do. The town's shopping centre houses a collection of fashion stores, jewellers and health and beauty boutiques. There are many places to eat, including award winning restaurants serving fresh local produce and fusing the best of Irish, continental and Asian cuisine. A vibrant nightlife starts with live music and entertainment in the numerous pubs and bars, then moves on to venues like Dinn Ri, which is a bar, a nightclub, a function room and a terraced garden all rolled into one. You will also find a great tradition of art and culture in Carlow with amenities such as the VISUAL - Centre for Contemporary Art & The George Bernard Shaw Theatre.

Golf, angling, cycling and equestrian are all popular sporting activities, while the Autumn Walking Festival is a great chance for serious ramblers and casual hikers alike to explore Carlow on foot.
