The Crystal Clear MSD Health Literacy Awards were established in 2007 as a partnership between MSD Ireland (HH) Ltd and NALA (National Adult Literacy Agency). The Awards aim to recognise and reward the efforts people working in the health arena make to address the issue of health literacy across education, training, health writing and patient communications.

It is an online education training course developed as a collaboration between the MSD Science Centre, experts in the area of rheumatology and GPs with an interest in the area. The course provides valuable training to either hospital doctors working in rheumatology or GPs with an interest in developing their knowledge of managing patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or gout. The content includes valuable video footage of the physical examination of patients with arthritis as well as information on burden of illness, taking a history, investigations, management of OA, RA, Gout and pain. The course is used as a training tool by many of Ireland's leading teaching hospitals and was developed with Dr Gaye Cunnane, Consultant in Rheumatology, St James's Hospital, Dublin & National Specialty Director for Higher Medical Training in Rheumatology, The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI).

In 2006 MSD Ireland established the MSD Science Centre as it's platform on which to deliver medical education to the Irish health professional community. All projects of the MSD Science Centre are developed in collaboration with independent medical experts and stakeholder organisations in related therapy areas. To date the MSD Science Centre has delivered two national GP conferences, bursaries for 17 nurses to complete a 6 month Paediatric Asthma Diploma, online education in the area of arthritis (www.managingarthritis.ie) and many regional education meetings for general practitioners. |
