Environmental protection and sustainability are key pillars of MSD in Ireland's corporate business objectives. We recognise we are stewards of the environment in the communities in which we operate. We are committed to discovering and using environmentally sustainable technologies in the research and manufacture of our medicines.

AIR: MSD in Ireland is committed to investing in new technologies and the upgrading of existing technologies, which are designed to exceed the highest air quality standards.

ENERGY: At MSD in Ireland we recognise our responsibility to be a leader in efficient energy use. We are committed to using energy from renewable sources and conserving and reducing its use in our facilities in Ireland.

WASTE: At MSD in Ireland the elimination, reduction, reuse and recycling of our waste is an integral part of the life cycle approach we take to our production processes. We operate our facilities to the highest waste management standards and are dedicated to continuous improvement in this area.

WATER: MSD in Ireland recognises water as a precious resource and a critical component in the manufacturing of our life saving medicines. We are committed to achieving sustainable water management within our operations. We take its conservation, its protection and its appropriate use very seriously.

MSD in Ireland is leading innovative environmental projects that are positively impacting our business, communities and employees around the country. The following are just a few of the many projects which illustrate the impact we are having:

  • Our Swords facility has achieved a 42% reduction in landfill waste over the last four years.
  • In 2011 our Ballydine site in Co. Tipperary installed solar panels for hot water generation in the Employee Services Building which will deliver; water reduction of 7,000m3 and a reduction of 100 metric tones.CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.
  • Our Rathdrum site in Co. Wicklow started a formal energy reduction programme in 2006 and since then electricity usage has been reduced by 18% and natural gas usage has been reduced by 35%.
  • The Brinny site in Co. Cork has implemented a programme to reduce the number of medicine vials sent for incineration by 50,000 per annum.
